When yf 19 and yf 21 color swap. Good to know

Got one of these for myself a couple months ago, specifically the Revival Red Shoulder Custom. It's genuinely a lovely piece. Kinda wish instead of the DMZ, Takara in the early 00's had just blown this design up to 1/18 scale, cause then you'd have a Scopedog that fits with 80's GI Joes.

This toy and their Dougram forever set me as a robot fan as a kid (and still as an adult)!

I am absolutely shocked at the engineering and detail work going into this. This beats out even some of takara’s best of the 80s! Beats most diaclone and transformers

What's happening with these releases, now? We have the head moulds for each of the main versions, so I don't know why Bandai can't release the remaining TV and movie VF-1s. The strike parts set hinted at a Max and Roy movie release.

You are definitely the premier Macross reviewer, but the thing that bugs me is that you call the DX Chogokin figures "toys". Toys are for kids. What you are reviewing are collectibles. Kids can't afford a $250 figure.

I got a banpresto when I was in 9th or 10th grade. Was the only kid who remembered let alone still loved robotech/macross. We weren't poor but didn't have money for the toynami masterpiece or early Yamato toys. I got one of these off ebay and was so excited which do quickly turned to such profound disappointment I got a refund on it. Couple years later I saved up and got a Yamato 1/48 E

Can you share your thoughts on the similarity between the SV-51 from Macross Zero and the VF-27 (and the VF-25). They are all essentially the same except for wing comfiguration. I'm more interested in the real life design rationale than the lore.

Someone might think they call it Revival to trick some people who think it's a Renewal. But it is mostly the same figure as before. Including those tiny things that covers the shoulder part who breaks so easily.

Thank you for this review showing the differences. I just ordered one. I remember how hard it was to access these toys back in the day and am glad Bandai is re-releasing them. Frontier and SDFM were my two fave series in the Macross universe.

Are the missle pods molded in two color plastic or is it just paint apps. They look like they could be modified to have open hatches. What is the point of creating armored parts if your not going to include open hatches with missle details inside. The pod mounted to the arm is ok I guess but the chest mounted bays should open.

My Nightmare Plus is still in good shape, only a small crack in one triangle and I still use the armor parts occasionally. But for the last 5 years it's stuck in fighter mode. A shame. A need one of the new ones.

TPS Teal Plastic Syndrome (Although that might be a dark gray knee joint)

heres hoping that bandai would reissue the nightmare plus with armor parts bundled and the rvf-171 nightmare plus with the dome and two fold boosters. Teal 171 is the best 171 (luca's is my second favorite cause I love domes on planes lol) but yeah my nightmare plus' knee also exploded...

I guess the Nightmare Plus is just very anime accurate, it explodes with the slightest touch

I just got the vf171 ex and it will come to me on Thursday. I really hope they will soon come out with the nightmare plus version of the vf171

On a side note, I really wish the Macross series go back to its roots of fighting the Zentradi, maybe from a different story arc of following the 2 Space armor platforms and their defence of the inner solar system during the Zentradi saga when the SDF1 was out near Pluto (and if they could tone back on the freaking singing and focus on cool space battles, would be even better) Love this DX VF. Got to get myself one.

Bandai will never give us a cannon fodder reissue but dammit the 171 Plus deserves a Revival. I've come into possession of a Plus that was "unopened" by Mandarake's standards, and while it's overall in good condition it's definitely true the plastic it was built from is a truly cursed batch, with microfractures on the infamous black triangles. Still love and admire the insanity behind its engineering, though. The mad scientist who came up with those leg swivels would probably tell all of us how the design is perfect and it's our fault for manhandling the toy that it's so prone to breakage.

I was interested in these but they are too small for the price and the compromises that have to be made because of the scale are a dealbreaker.

I am a huge fan of the 171 design, especially the canon fodder color scheme, and I believe I am not alone here. But that exploding knee issue on the Nightmare Plus still left a very bad taste in my mouth. An expensive toy that I only transformed once, and the next thing I knew, the knee joint simply dissolved… wth!!! Having said that, I would still buy a new version if only they would redesign the toy, but I just don’t think it will happen.
